9-19-77 Black Monday Steel Closings Changed Us Forever

"Black Monday" is the way we refer to September 19, 1977, when 5,000 employees showed up for work at the Campbell Works and were told the mill was shut down. It was the first of the area's big mills to close and all the others followed.Young people today don't realize how devastation these closings were to The Mahoning Valley. We used to be a big booming major manufacturing center. This was the first domino to fall in the deindustrialization endless deindustrialization of America. The closing was a knockout punch that we have never bounced back from. Sadly I watched it all happen from my front porch. I grew up one block from the mills on Poland Ave. and my great grandfather, grandfather and other relatives worked there.
