How The NFL Helmet Rule Came About. There Wasn't One Til 82

Myles Garrett got suspended for doing something that there was no rule against until 1982. Here's how the helmet rule came to be. In a game between The Raiders and The Jets, wildman Lyle Alzado got into a confrontation with Chris Ward and ripped his helmet off and threw it. He didn't even get thrown out of the game. Anyway, after that incident, Rule 12, Section 2, Article 15 was enacted to ban the use of a helmet as a weapon. Alzado said he hated Chris Ward and if he had the chance to make him swallow his helmet he would have done it.
